Records from: Embase / Embase Classic / Medline
Embase is comprised of content merged from three databases:
- Embase, the Excerpta Medica database from Elsevier – 1974 to present
- Embase Classic (Excerpta Medica Abstract Journals backfile) – 1947-1973
- Medline, from the U.S. National Library of Medicine
- Includes current Medline (1966 onward) plus OldMedline (back to 1950)
Redundant records between databases have been de-duplicated and removed, so that only unique database citations are retrieved when you search Embase and unless otherwise specified, each search is automatically run across all three databases by default.
However, if you wish, you can restrict your search to any of these file segments by checking the appropriate box.
Notes:
- Access to Embase Classic is determined by your institution’s subscription terms; click Profile for details, or see your librarian or database administrator. For subscribers to Embase Classic, Old Medline has been de-duplicated.
- In cases where both Embase and Medline index an article (for example, a paper from New England Journal of Medicine), during de-duplication the Embase record is kept and the Medline record is eliminated.
- If you check the Medline box, you will retrieve all records within Medline (previously, the "Medline"? option defined records "unique to Medline"?).
- Records unique to Embase can be retrieved by the search: [embase]/lim NOT [medline]/lim.
