Combined Searches

All searches are represented by set numbers (e.g. #1, #2, #3). These set numbers can be used to combine searches, making possible a ‘building-block’ approach to searching. In Embase, several options are available to combine searches, the first two of which are shortcuts that can be executed directly from Session Results:

  • Basic Combine: In the Session Results box, select the checkboxes of the searches to be combined. Then select either Combine using AND or Combine using OR, and click the Combine button.
Note: Basic Combine is the default option. To switch to more advanced options, click Advanced.
  • Advanced Combine: In the Session Results box, switch to Advanced Combine clicking Advanced on the right. Then enter your desired combined search, such as (#1 AND #2) NOT #3 and click Combine:
Note: to switch back to Basic Combine, click Basic on the right.
  • Quick or Advanced Search: You may also combine active searches in these Search Forms. Note that search numbers may also be combined with search terms,
    #7 not #6
    (#3 or #4) and #5
    #12 and ‘rat’/de
